First off, I hope everyone had a safe and fun New Year. Coincidentally, this post is about my shift on New Years day.
In Philadelphia, every New Years Day, the Mummers have an enormous parade that hundreds of people attend. The bar I work is at the very end of the parade route and a lot of people come in for more drinks or a bite to eat.
When I entered work, my boss told me our 86 list (86 is a term in the industry, indicating we are out of a certain item). The list for the bar wasn’t terrible, we were only out of Yuengling bottles. But food wise… we were out of… ALL BURGERS, boneless wings, mozzarella sticks, potato skins, bacon, cheddar cheese, mayo, pulled pork sandwiches.
Needless to say the people that were drunk and wanted to eat were not amused. They all kept asking me why.. why why why? Good question, I am just a bartender I am not the one that does the order. Once they realized that I was only the messenger they felt bad for me. I wasn’t going for pity, but it did help my tips.
So, please know what is going on in your town and order liquor, beer and food accordingly, it can make or break your bartender!
Safe drinking!
