It is rough trying to get a bartending gig straight out of the gate. Most places in New York require 3 years experience… the only problem is no one will hire so where the hell do you get experience. Even after I got my license in NY I started waiting tables and after a year they offered me a bartending spot.
There were people that were there years before me and they got mad that I got moved up. But it is the people that do their job well instead of saying how great they are that get the job. Get to work a little early, do your job well and then some…. in no time they will move you up if you have a great attitude.
If that doesn’t sound like something you would like to do, then I would suggest bar backing first and then moving up to bartender. But everyone has to start somewhere.
Good luck!
